Despite the relatively dry climate here in the Amarillo area, excess humidity could be a problem inside your home. Too much moisture can encourage mold and mildew growth, degrade the quality of insulation, and cause structural damage to your home.
High Humidity and Window Condensation
One sign of high humidity inside your house is condensation on the inside of your windows. Even with high-efficiency double- or triple-glazed windows, you might notice water or ice on the inside surface of the glass, especially during cold weather when the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperature is high. Colder air can’t hold as much moisture as warm air, so the water evaporated in the warm air in the middle of a room condenses when the air is cooled as it circulates near the cold window.
Window condensation isn’t a major concern if it occurs only on extremely cold days. If your windows stay damp and foggy even in milder weather, you might have excess humidity inside your home. The moisture could damage window frames and walls as it runs off of window panes. There could also be condensation inside walls and ceilings that’s not as obvious as it is on windows.
Reduce Indoor Humidity
There are some simple steps you can take to reduce the humidity inside your house:
- Use exhaust fans. Exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms can remove moisture caused by cooking, showering and other activities. Be sure exhaust fans and the dryer vent exhaust to the outside, not just into the attic.
- Don’t water houseplants too much. Excessive watering can lead to excess humidity indoors. You might consider keeping all of your plants in one sunny room that’s isolated from the rest of your house.
- Seal your basement or crawl space to keep moisture from seeping in from the ground.
- Ventilate the attic. Be sure soffit vents aren’t blocked by insulation and gable or ridge vents are kept open.
