Quick Fixes to Keep Your Home Cool
In Canyon, Texas, the chill of fall takes its time settling in, and the back to school season still leaves us sweltering. If you’re feeling the heat, here are some tips to help you keep your home cool and comfortable without blasting the air conditioner and paying a high utility bill.
Landscape for Comfort
Plant trees and shrubs strategically to shade your house from the sun. Use deciduous trees on the south side of the home for full shade in summer that will gradually thin out as leaves drop along with temperatures. In the west, use trees with crowns that are low to the ground for soothing shade from the setting sun. Shade your air-conditioning unit as well. This will help it operate more efficiently.
Check Your Fan Settings
Make sure your ceiling fans are rotating counter-clockwise. This will create a refreshing wind-chill effect that makes the room feel a few degrees cooler. The ceiling fan uses less energy than your air conditioner, giving you an energy-efficient way to either boost your air conditioner or simply replace it as temperatures gradually cool down outside.
Schedule HVAC Maintenance
If you haven’t had your air conditioner tuned up within the last year, schedule this important maintenance visit now. An annual tune-up will keep your air conditioner in prime condition. During this visit, your HVAC technician will clean, lubricate, and tighten the parts so it’s operating at peak efficiency. An air conditioner that’s well maintained requires fewer repairs and enjoys a longer lifespan.
Shade Your Windows
Close the curtains and blinds over your south- and west-facing windows to keep your home cooler during the day. Installing awnings over these windows will also reduce the sun and heat in these areas if your roof overhang isn’t broad enough to do the job.
